Our workshops revolve around the design thinking process: exploring the museum collection through the lens of critical and creative thinking and problem solving. They support the National Curriculum at KS1 - 5 and complement study at GCSE and above. Each session can accommodate 1 class (maximum 32 students). We have 4 workshops to choose from for Primary and Secondary students and two timeslots to choose from: AM 10.30 - 12.00 or PM 13.00 - 14.30.

Pattern, Shape & Me (KS1 & 2 - Ages 5 to 11 years)
This workshop explores pattern and shape within the Islamic Middle East Galleries, whilst looking at the cultural identities behind their design. The session focuses on the KS1 & 2 Maths curriculums, in particular Geometry, Art & Design and the PSHE curricula. This workshop includes a guided visit to the Islamic Middle East gallery.

Think It, Make It (KS2 & 3 - Ages 7 to 14 years)
In this hands-on KS2-3 workshop, students explore how designers turn their ideas into innovative, functional, and appealing products. Using key objects from the V&A’s Design: 1900 to Now collection, they’ll tackle real-world problems, develop and communicate their own ideas, and engage in the iterative process of designing and making a simple prototype.

Fashion for Performance (KS3, 4 &  5 - Ages 11 to 18 years)
This workshop uses the V&A’s dynamic and diverse Theatre and Performance collection, drawing on particular pieces from stage and screen to highlight techniques, genres, and influential individuals. Explore how to decode fabric design, focus on character, using costume and clothing as a performance in its own right.

Design for Change (KS4 & 5 - Ages 14 to 18 years)
In a world where social, environmental and political challenges might seem overwhelming, design has a role to play in raising awareness, supporting change and prompting positive behaviour. Using examples of graphic art and objects from the V&A's Design: 1900 to Now gallery, this workshop focuses on the power of creativity to promote zeitgeist movements to galvanise change, and introduces artists and objects which encourage students to explore the designer's moral responsibility, while imagining their own protest art.
