Perhaps the most iconic photograph of David Bowie’s storied career, this powerful monochrome portrait was taken for the cover of Bowie’s 1973 album Aladdin Sane. Legendary British photographer Brian Duffy took the shot in his North London studio, here remastered from the original negative by Duffy’s son Chris. Aladdin Sane was an evolution of the Ziggy Stardust alter ego, described by Bowie as ‘an electric boy… cracked by lightning'.

The photograph is printed on titanium smooth metallic gloss paper (300 gsm), finished with a silver mount and embossed with the Duffy Archive stamp.

This unique collectors edition is exclusive to the V&A shop, to celebrate the opening of David Bowie Centre at V&A East Storehouse; the home of the world’s largest collection dedicated to the life and works of David Bowie.

About the artist
Brian Duffy

Brian Duffy

Brian Duffy (1933 – 2010) was a groundbreaking British photographer who shaped the visual language of the Swinging Sixties. He redefined the aesthetics of fashion by elevating fashion photography into high art. Starting at Harper’s Bazaar in 1957, he later worked with Vogue and Elle, known for capturing models in dynamic, real-world settings. Duffy famously collaborated with David Bowie, creating iconic images, including the Aladdin Sane album cover. In 1979, disenchanted by the industry, he quit photography, attempting the dramatic act of burning his archive. An emblematic gesture of erasure that reflected his rebellious spirit. His son, Chris Duffy, later revived his legacy.
